I think the first one should have more fill light, as the black dress seems to have been consumed by the dark background.

I agree with your assesment that the black dress is being consumed by the dark background, but like what I told the students, is to add a kicker light. Increasing the fill light will have a drastic effect on the overall impact of the image due to lighter shadows, so not the best way to seperate the black dress from the dark background.
